My technique has evolved from a pure application of the medium into one that uses a combination of different water-based materials. The mixture of these produces an interesting and varied background texture onto which negative and positive marks are applied using gouache, pastel and oil pastel to create opaque areas in contrast to the more transparent. The paint may be applied using brush, finger, roller, card, palette knife, spatter and flick. My more traditional approach to water colour, and in its purest form, is reserved for specific subjects that require a gentle, more high-key appearance where its beautiful transparent qualities can be used to maximum effect, and textures and surface are of less importance than the appearance of the washes on the paper.
